Will my insurance pay for a Power Wheel Chair or Scooter?
Most plans have a provision for this type of durable medical equipment. Having the benefit coverage is only half the battle. Your doctor must complete a Letter of Medical Necessity and the provider must perform a home assessment. The areas of focus are Mobility related activities of daily living (MRADL). MRADL's include but are not limited to performing personal hygiene, using the bathroom, preparing meals, cooking performing laundry, caring for children or pets, eating meals, getting the mail, shopping and much more. The challenge becomes; how will the Power wheel Chair or Scooter enable you to perform some of the these tasks independently, efficiently or safely? key questions become; can a cane or walker, crutches or ,manual wheel chair substitute for the Power wheel chair or scooter. If not why?

Majors Medical Supply. has experienced clinical staff to document the home assessment to determine what MRADL exist and evidence that the equipment is appropriate and safe for the patient in his or her home.

Is a Stair Lift covered by Insurance?
Depends. Most major plans including Medicare do not pay for Stair Lifts. Majors Medical Supply will provide free home consults to determine what the best options are for Stair Lifts in your home. In most cases straight rails are used and installation takes only 2-3 hours. Visit our retail store to get a live demonstration of a Stair Lift and see the many options that are available. What is the criteria to get a Lift Chair and is it covered by insurance?
The criteria usually depends on the Insurance. Most of the time, the single most important criteria requires that the patient has difficulty getting to a standing position from a sitting position. In addition, the condition has a diagnoses that relates to a neuromuscular weakness (such as a stroke, Parkinson's etc) and or a severe arthritic condition in the hips or knees. The condition tends to be permament. It is important to note that the patient must be ambulatory despite the condition. Also, in most cases if a wheel chair either manual or electric has been provided recently or in the past, the patient may not elligable for a lift chair.

Does the Insurance pay for the entire cost of a lift chair?
No. The insurance company will typically pay for the lift mechanism, but not the furniture part (fabric, cushion of chair etc). Their are hydraulic lift mechanisms that do not include the furniture part. A Certificate of Medical Neccessity is required for a lift chair.

Vertical Plat Form Lifts (VPL)
Vertical Platform Lifts are not usually covered by insurance. In some cases such as workman's compensation or under catastrophic circumstances, VPLs' are covered. Some site work has to be performed prior to installation and many towns have special permitting that is required. Depending upon your State of Residence, a State Certificate may be required. The important benefit of a VPL is access to the Residence that has a porch or deck. Installation is usually only a few hours. Lead time for the VPL varies but is usually 3 weeks or more.

Scooter and Power Wheel Chair Lifts (POV)
Once you have gotten a POV, the next thing you want to do is get out and enjoy the world. POV lifts allow you to take your Scooter or Power Wheel Chair in your car to anywhere you want to go. Key factors to consider are the weight of the POV and the suspension of the car/truck. A hitch is installed depending on the vehicle type and the weight capacity of the POV. Installation is 4-6 hours. Warranties vary, but most are 3 years or more.

Mechanical and Automatic Lifts
Mechanical Lifts are typically covered by insurance including Medicare. It must be proven that the patient cannot safely transfer on his or her own to a chair, bed or commode. In certain home situations, it may be unsafe or impossible for a care giver to transfer a patient safely. Automatic Lifts (Electric) are not normally allowed as they are considered a convenience. The Slings that transfer the patient are launderable and should be inspected with each use for frays in the fabric. Slings are normally replaced every 12 to 24 months. It is important when choosing a Lift that the height and weight of the patient be known and specifically the type of sling such as commode opening, full back support, Mesh, nylon and or divided leg. Each has their advantage and indication for best use.

RESIDENTIAL ELEVATORS
Residential elevators can be installed in newly constructed homes or homes that are older. When choosing your Residential Home Elevator company make sure you do your home work. Ask for references, proof of insurance and credit standing with the Manufacturer they use. Their are several phases involved which means a lot of planning on your part. Local permits are required and most states require a State Inspection. Blue Prints are normally provided by the Elevator Company, however an engineer may be required for structural engineering issues.

Bathtub Lifts
The therapeutic affects of bathing are well documented. Many people with disabilities are forced to take showers or must sit on a bench to rinse off. Majors Medical Supply has a Bath Lift that is battery powered and safely lowers the patient into the tub and allows for a slight recline. The Bath Lifts support up to 300 LBs and are battery operated. The Bath Lifts have a smart technology that determines the amount of charge remaining before the lift is lowered to ensure that their is enough power to return back to the up position. The Bath Lifts are affordable and make a wonderful gift for a loved one.
